These resources are crafted to assist you in navigating the intricacies of the NCA and Bar exams.
About The NCA Exams
The NCA process serves as the gateway for transferring your foreign legal education to Canada, paving the way for aspiring lawyers and professionals seeking roles that demand legal qualifications. Whether you aim to practice law in Canada or work in a capacity requiring legal expertise, the NCA exams are your inaugural step towards Canadian bar admission.
Understanding the NCA Process:
- Assessment of Foreign Legal Qualifications:
- Submit your application to the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) at https://nca.legal/process/application/.
- Mail your original or official pre-law university transcripts or arrange for your university to send the NCA official pre-law university transcripts (if applicable)
- Coordinate with your educational institution to send official transcripts, including detailed mark sheets, directly to the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA). Avoid mailing your original law school transcripts or degree certificates to the NCA, as they do not accept these documents directly from applicants.
- Upload an updated summary of your education and work experience, either in the form of a résumé or Curriculum Vitae, through the provided application form on the NCA Portal.
- If you are a lawyer, please coordinate with the bar association or bar council to send an official letter or certificate of good standing. This document should outline the date you were called to the bar and your current status as a member in good standing.
- The assessment process typically takes 10-15 weeks.
- The NCA outlines specific assignments necessary for law society bar admission.
- Assignments may involve writing NCA exams or undertaking courses at a Canadian law school.
- If dissatisfied with the assessment, you may appeal.
2. Registration and Writing NCA Exams:
- Register for and complete the NCA exams as indicated in your assessment file.
- In addition to the 5 Core Courses (Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Foundations of Canadian Law, Professional Responsibility), you may be required to take additional tests to demonstrate competency.
- NCA Exam results are released 2-3 months after completion.
3. Certificate of Qualification:
- Upon completion of assignments, the NCA certifies your qualification by issuing a Certificate of Qualification.
